JESS GERRING – HELLO HAIR

In case you hadn’t heard, vegan beauty is in. Demand for cruelty free products is booming and the US market alone is set to be worth $3.1B by 2025. While many of the big beauty brands are only now jumping on the vegan trend, this guest predicted it would happen quite a few years ago and she had the foresight to create a brand that filled a significant market gap – vegan, cruelty free hair care. Jess Gerring from Hello Hair founded the brand with two friends back in 2013 and since then has created a thriving global business with social following of 400k. Not bad for a trio who had no experience in hair care before they got started! In this episode of lady-land we spoke with Jess about how she inadvertently created the pouch packaging trend that has since been copied by all of her competitors, how not building retail margins into her pricing strategy at the beginning has hamstrung the business’s growth, and what it’s like to build a brand with two friends.

We created the pouch packaging because we wanted to solve a postage issue – it meant we could cut costs by posting them in an envelope. It was ironic when all the big companies started copying!

We didn’t have a business plan. We launched in 3 months with one product that retailed for $15. That was it.
